England’s Test captain, Ben Stokes, expresses willingness to rejoin limited-overs squad if approached by McCullum.
Stokes Open to White-Ball Return
Ben Stokes, the England Test captain, has expressed his openness to rejoining the white-ball setup under new coach Brendon McCullum if the opportunity arises. However, he clarified that there have been no discussions about his return to the limited-overs squads.
McCullum’s Coaching Appointment
McCullum’s recent appointment as head coach for all formats follows a two-year period in which England had separate coaches for white-ball and red-ball teams. This change came after Matthew Mott stepped down as the limited-overs coach in July. McCullum will lead the limited-overs teams during England’s tour of India in January.
Stokes’ Limited White-Ball Appearances
Stokes has been a vital part of the Test team since McCullum took over in May 2022, but his appearances in England’s white-ball teams have been limited. He had initially retired from one-day internationals, returned for last year’s ODI World Cup, and last played a Twenty20 international in the World Cup final in November 2022.
Stokes’ Reflections on His Career
“I’ve played a significant amount of white-ball cricket for England, and I’m very proud of what I’ve achieved in that format,” Ben Stokes told Sports Media Channel. “If I get a call to play, I’d definitely say yes. But I won’t be too disappointed if I don’t—that just means I can relax and watch the others go out and perform. I haven’t had any discussions with Baz [McCullum] about this at all.”
Redemption of Ben Stokes
Ben Stokes’ journey in international cricket is a tale of resilience and redemption. His defining moment came during the 2016 World T20 final against West Indies, where he was tasked with defending 19 runs in the final over. In a heartbreaking turn of events, Carlos Brathwaite struck four consecutive sixes, leaving Stokes devastated and the England team in despair. It was a bitter lesson, but one that would fuel his determination.
Fast forward to 2019, and Stokes emerged as a beacon of hope for England in the ICC Cricket World Cup final against New Zealand. In a nail-biting finish, he scored 15 runs in the final over, leveling the match and eventually leading England to victory in the super over based on boundary counts. This triumph marked England’s first-ever ODI World Cup win and transformed Stokes into a national hero.
His redemption continued in 2022 when he played a crucial role in the T20 World Cup final against Pakistan in Melbourne. On a challenging pitch, Stokes held his nerve, scoring over 40 runs and guiding England to another major trophy. These performances not only underscored his talent but also highlighted his ability to rise above adversity. Stokes’ journey from the lows of 2016 to the highs of 2019 and 2022 serves as a testament to his character, making him one of England’s most celebrated cricketers and a symbol of perseverance in the face of challenges.
Injury Update and Rehabilitation Progress
Ben Stokes has been sidelined since suffering a left hamstring injury while playing for the Northern Superchargers in The Hundred last month. He mentioned that his rehabilitation is progressing well, and a recent scan confirmed he’s on track to participate in the Test series against Pakistan.

Focus on Comprehensive Fitness
“As far as bowling goes, it’s not just my hamstring that I need to focus on I need to get everything working well together,” he added. “I have to ensure that all aspects of my fitness are in order to avoid causing damage to other parts of my body.”
