Former cricketer and analyst Sikander Bakht has expressed amusement at Babar Azam’s delayed resignation from the white-ball captaincy, saying he finds the timing rather humorous.

A day earlier, Babar Azam had announced his resignation as captain of Pakistan’s white-ball team, stating that he wanted to focus more on his batting and spend time with his family. His resignation was promptly accepted by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

Commenting on Babar’s decision, Sikander Bakht shared his views during an interview on Geo News. He remarked, “Pakistan’s last match in the Men’s Cricket World Cup was on June 16, and here we are, three and a half months later. It took Babar this long to feel embarrassed by his poor performance and step down. In my opinion, he should have resigned right after our last game in the World Cup.”

Bakht further added, “The whole nation was calling for Babar’s resignation following Pakistan’s disappointing World Cup campaign, but he chose to hold on, as that’s just his style. I believe even now, he was likely asked to resign, but regardless, it’s a smart decision, even if it came three and a half months late. The real question now is who the cricket board will appoint as the new captain.”

Sikander Bakht also touched on the internal dynamics within the team, saying,

“There are three players in the running for the captaincy. While Babar was the official captain, Mohammad Rizwan and Shaheen Afridi also have their eyes on the leadership role. Moreover, there’s Shan Masood, who also has captaincy ambitions despite losing all five of his Test matches as skipper.”
