South Africa’s Dominant Start: Crushing 10-Wicket Victory Against West Indies in Women’s T20 World Cup
West Indies managed to post 118-6 in their innings, but South Africa’s disciplined bowling and top-order batting ensured a comfortable win. Captain Laura Wolvaardt led from the front, scoring an unbeaten 59 – the first half-century of the tournament. Her opening partner, Tazmin Brits, was equally impressive with a commanding 57 not out. Together, they forged an unbeaten partnership of 116 runs.
Earlier in the game, South African left-arm spinner Nonkululeko Mlaba put on a show with the ball, taking 4-29, while Marizanne Kapp’s tidy figures of 2-14 included the early dismissal of West Indies captain Hayley Matthews, who could only manage. 10 runs.
Reflecting on her performance, Mlaba, who was named Player of the Match, explained her strategy: “I just focused on staying close to the stumps, making sure not to stray. That approach worked really well for me. I’m also grateful for the support from my teammates.”
Despite a few sparks from West Indies’ Stafanie Taylor (44 not out) and Zaida James (15), their total fell well short of what was needed to challenge South Africa. The closest they came to breaking South Africa’s opening stand was when spinner Karishma Ramharack dropped a return catch off Wolvaardt.
As South Africa move forward with this commanding win, their next challenge awaits in Sharjah, where they will take on England in what promises to be an exciting clash. Meanwhile, West Indies will look to bounce back when they face Scotland, who lost to Bangladesh in the tournament opener.
