Babar Azam’s exclusion raises questions about the future of Pakistan cricket and its key players.

Babar Azam’s recent exclusion from Pakistan’s Test team has sparked significant debate within the cricketing world. Known as one of the country’s greatest modern-day cricketers, Babar’s form had declined, leading the selection committee to make the tough decision of resting him. Although the official reason given was to let him “rest,” the underlying issue is his poor performance in recent Tests. This call marks a pivotal moment in Pakistan cricket, as removing a player of Babar Azam’s caliber is not only rare but also highlights deeper issues within the team.

Tough Decisions for Pakistan’s Selection Committee

Azhar Ali, a senior member of the selection committee, was tasked with informing Babar Azam of his exclusion. It wasn’t an easy job, especially given Babar’s status as the team’s former captain and star player. The decision was a unanimous one, indicating that the selection panel, which includes names like Aaqib Javed, Aleem Dar, and Asad Shafiq, felt that this was necessary. It’s worth noting that the team’s coach and current captain were not involved in the decision, which suggests that they might have disagreed with the call.

Babar Azam’s Form: A Cause for Concern?

Although Babar Azam is unquestionably Pakistan’s best batter, his recent form in Test matches has been a concern. He hasn’t scored a half-century in nearly two years, though the number of Test matches Pakistan plays is limited, which makes it harder for players to regain form. Unlike other international players who get consistent opportunities, Babar’s career has been hampered by long breaks between Tests. Despite his poor run, many believe that retaining him in the squad for upcoming Tests could have been a reasonable decision.

A Much-Needed Break or Risky Move?

There’s a sense that a break might help Babar Azam regain his form and confidence. The past few years have been intense for him, with the pressures of captaincy and poor team results weighing heavily on his shoulders. Allowing him some time to decompress could be beneficial. However, in Pakistan’s unpredictable cricket environment, taking a break can be risky. Many players who step out of the spotlight struggle to regain their place.

While the decision to drop Babar Azam is controversial, it might give him the chance to reflect and come back stronger. Yet, given the volatility of Pakistan cricket, this break could either revitalize his career or complicate it further.
