The West Indies women’s cricket team delivered a stunning performance in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, beating England in a thrilling contest on Tuesday. Led by captain Hayley Matthews, the Caribbean side displayed a strategic masterclass at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, booking their place in the semi-finals with an all-around brilliant game plan.

From the start, West Indies’ approach was clear—play with intensity, put pressure on the opposition, and dominate in both batting and bowling. Matthews and her spinners controlled England’s scoring rate, while smart field placements amplified their defensive efforts.

Smart Batting Order: The Secret to Success

One of the standout elements of this victory was how the batting order was restructured for maximum impact. Deandra Dottin, a power hitter, was given the role of finisher, allowing Matthews to open with more freedom. The decision to promote Qiana Joseph to a higher position paid off brilliantly as Joseph hit her maiden T20I fifty, contributing 52 from 38 balls.

Matthews herself was exceptional, scoring 50 off 38 deliveries and partnering with Joseph to set up a century-stand during the powerplay, a critical phase of the game that left England reeling.

“I’m so proud of the team,” Matthews said after the match. “To come out and put up a performance like that, especially with Joseph getting her first T20I fifty—what a moment for her and for us!”

A Clinical Finish: The Final Push

Though West Indies slowed slightly towards the end of the chase, they remained in control, backing themselves to complete the victory. Matthews praised her team’s calm approach under pressure, highlighting their collective confidence in chasing down any total.

“We always back ourselves in a run chase,” she explained. “Each player knows their role, and it’s all about execution. I feel we’re peaking at the right time, and I hope we can carry this momentum into the semi-finals.”

A Semi-Final Clash Against New Zealand Awaits

The victory sets up an exciting semi-final against New Zealand in Sharjah. Matthews emphasized the importance of refocusing and keeping their sights set on the ultimate prize—the World Cup title.

“We’ve got a day to rest, but we need to get back to work quickly. The job’s not done yet. New Zealand will be tough, but we’re ready for the challenge,” she said confidently.

For England, it was a disappointing night. Captain Heather Knight, unable to field due to injury, graciously acknowledged the brilliance of the West Indies’ performance. “Credit to them—they came at us hard and played the conditions perfectly,” Knight admitted.
