In a surprising turn of events, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is reportedly exploring the possibility of bringing back left-arm pacer Mohammad Amir into the national ODI squad. According to reports from cricket journalist Ejaz Wasim Bakhri, the PCB is eyeing Amir as a key player to bolster Pakistan’s bowling attack ahead of the 2025 Champions Trophy, which Pakistan is set to host.
Pakistan cricket has been facing a series of challenges lately, following an early exit from the 2024 T20 World Cup and several disappointing results. Despite a recent victory against England in Multan, the overall performance has raised concerns within the cricket board. As part of its efforts to improve the team’s fortunes, the PCB views Amir as a potential game-changer.
Amir Targeted for Champions Trophy 2025
The PCB’s focus is now on preparing for the 2025 Champions Trophy, where the pressure will be high as Pakistan will play on home soil. To avoid underperforming in such a crucial tournament, the board is reportedly keen on recalling Amir, who last played an ODI for Pakistan in October 2019 against Sri Lanka.
Amir, who retired from international cricket in December 2020, cited mental exhaustion and differences with the team’s management as reasons for stepping away from the sport at the time. However, he reversed his decision ahead of the 2024 T20 World Cup, showing a willingness to rejoin the national team setup.
Why Amir for 2025?
Amir’s potential return is largely motivated by his impressive track record, especially in high-stakes tournaments. He was instrumental in Pakistan’s victory in the 2017 Champions Trophy final against India, where he took three critical wickets.
