Breaking News: Babar Azam Resigns as Pakistan’s White Ball Captain
Recent cricket news reveals that Babar Azam has stepped down as captain of Pakistan’s white ball team. Although this breaking news is a bit old, the real news is that Pakistan has already decided on the next captain for the white ball formats. Shan Masood, the Test captain, has been given a final chance to prove himself in the three-match Test series against England starting on October 7. He has also been informed about this opportunity.
According to sources from Cric Bold, Babar Azam was distressed by the criticism from former cricketers and his own performance. He also felt isolated due to the attitude of PCB officials and was aware of the board’s future plans. As a result, he made the decision himself, and the PCB allowed him to step down, which he announced via his social media account.
Sources indicate that Mohammad Rizwan has been tentatively appointed as the captain for both ODI and T20 formats, with the announcement expected before or during the England series. Pakistan is set to play limited-overs cricket next month in Australia and Zimbabwe.
Last Chance for Shan Masood as Test Captain in Upcoming England Series
As for the Test format, Shan Masood has received his final chance. If he fails against England, Mohammad Rizwan is likely to take over as Test captain during Pakistan’s tour of South Africa in December 2024.
Under Shan Masood’s captaincy, Pakistan has lost five consecutive Test matches and two series. A third defeat would seal his fate as captain, similar to Babar Azam’s tenure, which has not been very successful either. Babar’s record stands at 26 wins and 15 losses in 43 ODIs, and 48 wins against 29 losses in 85 T20s.
