Bengal Tigers captain Najmul Hossain Shanto expressed his disappointment regarding Shakib Al Hasan’s absence from what was anticipated to be his farewell Test match, labeling the situation as “unfortunate.” He emphasized the need for his team to concentrate on their upcoming challenge—the first Test against South Africa, scheduled to start on Monday.
Although Shakib was included in the squad and had expressed his intention to conclude his Test career in Dhaka, he was unable to travel due to protests against him in the city, following government advisories citing security concerns.
“It’s regrettable. It should have happened,” Shanto commented. “However, we cannot dwell on this on the eve of the Test match. [Shakib’s arrival] is beyond our control, so we’re not spending excessive time on it. Our focus must remain on the two important Tests ahead, and that’s what the players are concentrating on. We had envisioned a fitting send-off for one of the best players in the world. We all feel this remains unresolved.”
Shakib’s position in the national team became uncertain following the political upheaval in Bangladesh in August, as he was affiliated with the ousted political party. Shanto noted that the players are committed to their cricketing responsibilities, which is why they have refrained from discussing the issue publicly.
“Our priority is to win the Test starting tomorrow. We would have been thrilled if this had been his farewell Test. We are all aware of the reasons for his absence.”
Shanto acknowledged the challenges of replacing Shakib, highlighting that Mehidy Hasan Miraz has demonstrated his capabilities but will require time to fully adapt. “Replacing [Shakib] is tough, especially for the captain. He typically allowed us to include an extra batsman or bowler. Now, the No. 7 position becomes critical. We don’t have anyone exactly like Shakib bhai, but Miraz can be a strong option. He has been performing exceptionally well with both bat and ball. Miraz is ready for the added responsibilities and has shown improvement in his batting. If you look at the last few Tests, he has been putting the team in good positions. I hope Miraz can solidify that role in the coming years.”
Eyes on Mehidy to Fill Shakib’s Boots

Uncapped left-arm spinner Hasan Murad has been called up to replace Shakib for the first Test. Shanto stated that Murad deserved the selection and conveyed his confidence in the team’s spin department. “We have four quality spinners in our squad. Hasan Murad boasts an impressive first-class record and performs well on all types of pitches. This selection is well-deserved. Despite his good performances, Nayeem could not secure a place in the team. Whether we choose three or four spinners tomorrow, they are all capable. Regardless of our combination, we will give our best effort.”
As Bangladesh prepares for the two-test series against South Africa, they enter on the back of a successful 2-0 series victory in Pakistan, although they faced a 2-0 defeat in India earlier this month.
Shanto acknowledged that replacing Shakib is a significant challenge and highlighted Mehidy Hasan’s readiness to step up in his absence. “Mehidy has been impressive with both bat and ball, and we need him to fill Shakib’s shoes,” Shanto asserted.
He elaborated on the challenges of finding the right combination in the squad, stating, “It is hard to match him (Shakib). We are struggling to find the right combination, and it will take time. I believe the players have the ability to step up and perform their roles effectively. The No. 7 position is crucial, and while we don’t have anyone exactly like Shakib bhai, Miraz can be a valuable option. He is bowling and batting superbly and has improved his overall game.”
Shanto also mentioned the coaching changes within the team, indicating that the players are adapting to the new head coach, Phil Simmons, while moving on from the previous approach under Chandika Hathurusingha. “A lot of things have changed in the last few days. The new coach is still getting to know the team and trying to understand everything. I have shared our plans with him, and we aim to utilize our experience effectively at this venue. We have to look forward and not dwell on the past,” he said.

He concluded by stating the importance of focusing on the upcoming matches, particularly against a relatively young South African side. “This is a great opportunity for us, especially playing at home. We need to dominate session by session and find a way to take 20 wickets. Our spinners will play a crucial role in this, and they must stick to the process,” he added.
As Bangladesh looks to capitalize on their home advantage, Shanto remains optimistic about their chances of securing their maiden Test victory against South Africa.
